Catenary is used to describe the curve assumed by anything hanging freely between two points of suspension. Due to the progressive decrease of weight as the curve descends, the degree of curvature increases constantly towards the lowest part. Catenary folds in sculptured drapery consist basically of two curved planes which meet at a rounded edge and is used extensively in all draped sculpture. A series of falling looped folds is also called a Gothic Cascade.
