Francois Roux is known as a painter of landscapes, portraits and plant studies and has devoted his artistic career to developing his methods of observation through the use of oils, tempera, watercolour, chalk and charcoal. A master draughtsman, he is equal to any choice of vantage point that offers a dramatic and challenging perspective of his subject.

Conceptually this new body of work is a development from Shibase's previous pre-occupation with the idea of Dictatorship and self serving leadership, a problem which has plagued Africa and many other parts of the developing world since independence. In that series he looked at various political, economic and social issues concerning Africa with the view to unpack some of the underlying reasons behind the slow pace of development in this continent.

Roelof Rossouw began painting seriously in 1992, having previously used his creative talent in the fields of graphic art and medical illustration. He has had a total of thirty seven solo exhibitions between the period of 1988 and 2011, as well as exhibiting in group shows in South Africa, London, Cheltenham, Glasgow, Jersey, Galway, Armagh (N. Ireland) San Francisco and Miami. This marks Roelof's thirteenth solo exhibition at The Cape Gallery.

The series of paintings on this exhibition derive from a reflection on the events at Marikana of 16 August 2012. A strike at a Lonmin-owned platinum mine in the Marikana area close to Rustenburg lead to a series of violent confrontations between police, mine security officials, trade union leaders and miners in which 34 miners were killed and an unknown number injured.
