South African Art Exhibition Press Release - pre-Crapalite Brotherhood

PRE-CRAPALITES: FARCE, FICTION OR FINE ART?

… a mystical brotherhood; seeking to be ‘non-contemporary’ and in rejecting all false conventionalism, so searches for a poetic evasion in an almost lost world of unreal and languid beauty.

David Krut Projects is bracing for their next exhibition of art and performance by the pre-Crapalite Brotherhood of
Robert Whitehead and Johan Engels.

This mysterious Brotherhood was founded on the banks of the Marico River in 2006. In a meeting of minds somewhere over the Great African Continent (Whitehead is based in Jozi and Engels in the UK), the Brotherhood
has collectively and independently created complex mysteries and mesmeric intricacies drawn from their mutual experience and shared history in theatre, music, opera, dance, art and the nightclubs of the world. Naturally,
literature is central to the Brotherhood and it is with some excitement that the pre-Crapalites will launch twelve new books and two biographies. These volumes are the fruits of their prolific outpourings and will be on view
at the exhibition, alongside limited-edition prints and other works on paper, including four unique works created telepathetically (sic) and superimposed on each other by printmaker Jill Ross at David Krut Print Workshop.

On the evening of the 23rd of June 2007, the exhibition will be opened at David Krut Projects by the Right Honourable Pamela, Lady Harlech. The pre-Crapalite Manifesto will be unveiled by another woman of considerable consequence, all in the glittering, lyp-synching presence of Daphne de la Rey.

The work is expected to speak for itself and the artists will not be available for interviews.

Saturday 23rd June
17.30 for 18.00
