Sydney Carter was born in Enfield, Middlesex, England 1874 – 1945
Art Education
- 1889 – 1890 Sydney Carter studied art at Buckhurst Hill Art School.
- 1890 – 1895 Sydney Carter studied art at Walthamstow School of Art (Art Teachers Certificate).
- 1895 – 1899 Sydney Carter studied art at Royal College of Art, London; won several medals and awards.
Short Artist Biography
- 1895 Sydney Carter won scholarship to Royal College of Art.
- 1923 Sydney Carter came to South Africa; traveled around the country.
- In the Orange Free State in 1925, elected Vice President of Orange Free State Society of Arts and Crafts.
- 1926 Sydney Carter settled in Johannesburg.
- 1927 Appointed to staff of Witwatersrand Tech College Art School. Sydney Carter became well-known particularly for his oil and gouache studies of trees; Illustrated several books, including ‘Skiddle’ by Dorothea Fairbridge.
- 1936 Small murals for Johannesburg Post Office.
- 1938 Sydney Carter commissioned to paint two large murals for new Cape Town Post Office – had his 1942 exhibition at Gainsborough Art Galleries, Johannesburg, when he was 68 years-old.
- 1948 Posthumous monograph, ‘Sydney Carter’, by his widow, Elizabeth Carter.

- 1894 First acceptance on Royal Academy. Sydney Carter frequently exhibited with Royal Institute (Watercolour), Royal Society of British Artists, Paris Salons.
- 1924 – 1940 Regularly on South African Academy.
- 1927 Inaugural Exhibition, South African Institute, Durban.
- 1936 Empire Exhibition, Johannesburg. Frequent on-man art exhibitions in South Africa.
