Otto Schröder was born in London, England 1913-1975

Art Education
1932-37: Landeskunstschule and, parttime, under Oscar Boegel and Hermann Junker, Hamburg.
1938: in Vienna

Short Artist Biography
Son of German father, British mother. Early childhood in London, repatriated to Germany at end of WW1; Otto Schröder was educated in Cologne; entered business, but attended evening classes in art and painted during his free time.
1939: Otto Schröder came to Cape Town on business; his contract was terminated by the outbreak of WW2; turned to art as full-time profession. Interned with other German nationals at Baviaanspoort, Pretoria; on release decided to remain in South Africa.
1947: Otto Schröder settled in Windhoek, Namibia; co-founder Namibian branch of SAAA.
1948: Otto Schröder established Children's Art Centre, Windhoek; active organizer, member of selection committees for several national art exhibitions; mainly interested in pastel-medium, portraits and landscapes; participated in numerous South African and Namibian art exhibitions; completed murals in several Namibian buildings.
1958: Otto Schröder wrote introductory essay for small monograph on Adolph Jentsch.
1962: Otto Schröder appointed to new chair of Fine Arts, Stellenbosch University; committee member, SA Akademy
1967/8: committee member, Design Institute Pretoria-Cape Town. Fellow of Royal Society of Arts.

1940: South African Acad Exhibition, Jhb - also `47 and `50.
1948: first one-man exhibition, Windhoek.
1952: Van Riebeeck Tercent Exhibition, Cape Town.
1954: SWA Exhibition, London and Germany.
1956: First Quad of South African Art.
1960: Second Quad of South African Art; South African Graphic Art, Yugoslavia.
1961: Sao Paulo Bien (gr).
1962: `Art in SWA', South African National Gallery, Cape Town.
1976: Commemorative Exhibition, Windhoek.
