Well I finally finished the second painting in my "Dust to Dust" series of oil paintings. Although it is the same size as the first oil painting in the series this painting took me a fair deal longer to complete. As like most people this time of the year is a busy one for me and I did not get to work on the oil painting as much as I wanted to.
The oil painting could also not be rushed as I often needed to use layers of oil paint to get the desired effect. I often had to wait a day or two for a layer of oil paint to dry before I could continue with the painting. Sometimes when I have more time to concentrate on my oil paintings I will work on two or more paintings on the same time so that I can work on the one painting whilst the other is drying.
Although, as with most artists, their is certain aspects of the oil painting I am not sure about; overall I am fairly happy with the result. I am aware that this painting is a step in a process and judged in that light I believe it to be one of my important oil paintings.
For me the oil painting has a romantic feel to it with a sense of drama attached to it. It is interesting how an artist sometimes get things out of his work that was not planned consciously but which ends up fitting nicely with what one has set out to do in the first place. I do not want to discuss in detail my interpretation of the work but I rather want the viewer to make up their own interpretation. I believe a successful oil painting has many interpretation and different people will get different meanings from the same painting.
