Figura serpentina is an Italian term used to charecterise the twisted, convoluted figures of Mannerist sculpture. In this kind of sculpture the forms are arranged spatially in all directions around a vertical axis, thus creating an extraordinarily dynamic, continuous spiral evolution in space. There is little or no suggestion of a plane of reference.
