My photographs focus on the excluded, warehoused in shantytowns and exiled from the formal world economy, a habitat largely constructed out of crude brick, recycled plastic, metal sheets, cardboard, cement blocks, and scrap wood, surrounded by pollution, excrement, and decay. Common purpose and intent draw people to interact in dynamic group activities or passive association. ‘Social Synergy’ is a well observed phenomenon. People congregate at the theatre, music festivals and sports events, carnivals, in church, marching, queuing or simply relaxing on the beach on New Years day.

The Photographers Gallery za is pleased to present Cape Town photographer, David Lurie’s solo exhibition, entitled Encounters at the Edge which is currently on view. This is Lurie’s first solo exhibition at this gallery. This exhibition, curated by Heidi Erdmann and assembled from previous series’ and new material has a strong focus on architecture.
