Alexandra Ross’ upcoming solo exhibition presents a new body of oil-on-paper paintings, monotypes and prints. The abstract works form part of a large-scale installation, one that includes the gallery itself. The title, 1:1 refers to a direct relationship between equal quantities but understood as one-to-one, refers to an intimate, private conversation between two people.

Designs of Self

In Designs of self  the focus will broadly fall on various interpretations of identity, the body and cultural expression. The artists consider the self in relation to the world and the predicaments of the impact of technology on the individual and society; artificiality and the posthuman body; and boundary situations where the self is continually challenged and renegotiated.

A rising voice of new Afrikaans artists, poets and literary thinkers have been grappling with the concept of an
Afrikaner identity that is not merely a now shameful label from the time the country is trying to forget,
but a culture that in itself is as African as any other.
