Mexican photographer Jan Smith is in South Africa courtesy of Koeberg Alert Alliance. This is the debut exhibition of photographs taken in Fukushima, Japan during February 2012. Smith documents remote and isolated modern-day ruins, constructs of nuclear disasters.  He sensitively focuses his lens on the catastrophic effects of nuclear disasters, and illustrates the improbability of life in these radioactive wastelands.  His photography is recognized by a variety of associations and media including multiple awards from the International Photographers Association and Photo District News.

Terra firma is the first in a series of curated exhibitions that explore the relationship of the self to place, land, soil or earth. Terra Firma artists David Koloane (tribute artist), Clare Menck, Jenna Burchell, Isabel Mertz, Marili de Weerdt and Leana van der Merwe attempt to uncover how we relate and emotionally attach ourselves to the land and space, and how we project hope, expectations and even our identity onto a piece of earth. However, for many people the dream to own a piece of land - even a teensy little piece - remains forever unfulfilled.
