Short Artist Biography
1885: Wallace Paton came to South Africa; lived and worked in Durban for the rest of his life; known to have left the town only once - on a painting trip to the Bushveld; was very much admired for his pastel-work; member of South African Society of Artists.
1905: Wallace Paton was a founder member of National Society of Artists; active in Durban art life.
1917: Roworth, in his essay on `South African Landscape Painting' in the Studio publication `Art of the British Empire Overseas', referred to Wallace Paton as "our leading painter of the sea."
1926: executive-member of South African Institute of Art. Senior partner of the architectural firm, Paton, Taylor, Bennet & Willies - designed many important commercial buildings in Durban.
1943: Wallace Paton appointed consultant architect for the new Durban Railway Station
